Digitalis pupurea, - Foxglove - "The poison is in the dose" - very toxic, even deadly, by today's standards, and no longer used as a therapeutic botanical, but for over 100 years it was used in very low doses by19th century botanical physicians (Eclectics) as the primary treatment for "dropsy", now known to be the edematous result of congestive heart failure. The therapeutic cardiac glycoside constituents were isolated in 1930 for the modern day cardiac pharmaceutical Digoxin, used for arrythmias and congestive heart failure. This plant is native and grows prolifically locally in Bellingham WA.
